成长的道路
和照片反映出来的气质不同，考伯特本人并不是一个梦想家。他有着运动员的体魄，长脸，灰眼睛，扎着马尾，表情严肃。他说，他作这些旅行是为了回应大象的召唤。他接受《纽约时报》采访时说：“因为小时候我长招风耳朵，所以常被人叫做大象。我妈担心我受精神创伤，就带我去医院做了耳朵整形手术。但是我总觉得我和大象有某种割不断的联系。”

高中时，考伯特成绩平平。毕业后，他做各种小工，生活一度很灰暗。直到21岁时，他决心成为一个作家。他说：“我喜欢读书。在学校时，我所有时间都在图书馆。坏老师可以教会你如何自学。”他梦想有一天可以到南太平洋中的岛屿去冒险，不过那时他所能到达的最远的地方是巴黎。

80年代的法国是外国艺术家的乐园，当时的社会党***力图振兴法国文化，以抵制美国文化的入侵。考伯特一边尝试写作，一边加入了一个外国艺术家的团体，该团体的宗旨是将法国文化带回各个成员的母国。考伯特说：“我们的第22条军规是巴黎是过日子的好地方，我们30个人中只有2个回了国。”

20多岁的时候，考伯特开始拍反映社会问题的记录片：一部关于强奸，一部关于濒临死亡的艺术家，还有一部关于爱滋病。最后一部影响最大，80年代中期时曾在美国发现频道和许多欧洲国家上放映过，得到广泛的好评。片中有2个男人接吻的镜头，该片的赞助商一家保险公司要求删除这个镜头，这令考伯特非常生气，从此发誓不再接受任何商业资助。

拍完记录片后，他转向了美术。他曾向好几个加拿大基金会申请经费，但都遭到拒绝。好在1992年，他还是瑞士和日本举办了他的个人影展“时间之潮”。这使他得到几个富有的收藏家的注意，其中包括法国的投资银行总裁、香港的时装零售业巨头、苏格兰的豪华游艇制造商等。他们成为了他的资助人，在他10年的拍摄过程中，为他提供了几百万美元。

人和动物双年展
“雪与灰”是十年拍摄的结果，但它还没有结束，还要继续拍下去。考伯特创立了一个“人与动物双年展”基金会，总部在日内瓦，向其他有志于探索人与动物之间关系的艺术家提供资助，并每二年搞一次活动，反映艺术与自然之间的关系。目前活动地点定在威尼斯，考伯特表示如果条件合适，其他城市也可以考虑。
计划中，“雪和灰”是“人与动物双年展”的第一个展览，它将作为一个系列一直办下去，和威尼斯双年展轮流举行。

“通常我们将动物看作危险和低等的，它们只能供我们戏耍和食用。它们在我们心目中的样子就是动物园里的样子，或者是在迪斯尼影片和马戏团里的样子，”考伯特说，“实际上，人和动物是在合作，就像一个大交响乐团，我们总是将自己视为主要演员，但事实上我们只是一个很小的部分。有各种各样的声音，我们感觉不到，但它们确实存在。这也可以被看作是一种‘种族隔离’，我的兴趣就是对其进行探索。大象跳舞和运动中的鲸鱼在视觉上都是很诗意的。跨物种的交流确实存在，我们只需安静的聆听就会明白。”
考伯特并不是环境保护的极端分子，他说：“许多环境问题并不是黑和白那样泾渭分明，‘人和动物双年展‘的目的就在建立一座理解的桥梁。”

虽然考伯特接受资助，但他不同意将资助人的姓名和标志与他的作品联系起来，哪怕仅仅是谈谈这些事情都很不情愿。他说：“我需要他们的钱，因为我可以用这些钱做很多事情，但我感觉这里多多少少有些浮士德式的交易，你用灵魂换来金钱。虽然电影界、体育界、文化界都在接受赞助，但我确实有这样的感觉。”而且更重要的是，“大象不会去投票，不需要去买汽车，你靠出卖它们的形象去换来这些东西，这是很可耻的事。商业化是和我的事业完全相背的。”

考伯特计划展览结束后去南极四个月，拍摄帝企鹅。此外，他居无定所的个人生活也将有所改变，他已经42岁了，看来是定居下来的时候了，他打算在巴黎的公寓里添几把椅子。他生命中还出现了一个新的女性，她现在正在达累斯萨拉姆照顾难民。不过这一切都比不上道路对他的召唤，他还将出发。
